About ACOSS

The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) is the peak organisation for community and social services in Australia and a national voice for the needs of people affected by poverty and inequality. ACOSS develops public policy, undertakes research, and promotes and communicates positions in the media, through direct advocacy and public campaigns. ACOSS is committed to ensuring people directly affected by poverty and inequality can participate fully in public policy development and debate and that the public narrative around poverty and inequality is informed and respectful.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Engagement and as part of the Communications and Engagement team, the Senior Media Advisor provides high-level strategic media advice to the CEO and Leadership Team and leads day-to-day media related activities including morning media monitoring, responsive media management, proactive pitching and the drafting of media releases, responses, opinion pieces and supports the social media content and strategy

The Senior Media Advisor also manages relationships with external media contractors and agencies and plays a critical role in ACOSS’ enable and amplify program of work, ensuring that people directly affected supported to feature in mainstream media.

About You

  • You want to see an Australia that treats all people with dignity and respect and is free of poverty and inequality
  • You have strong judgement, informed by a a highly developed and in-depth knowledge of the media landscape and a sound knowledge of government and political processes.
  • You have exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills tailored to different media.
  • You are responsive and flexible and can manage a working balance between competing demands and planned and reactive work.
  • From writing a media release or tweet to developing messaging and maintaining media relationships you are willing to chip in wherever it’s needed.
